Conquest of the Pole

Méliès was known for his fantastic special effects, made all the more impressive for a medium in its infancy. In Conquest of the Pole, his da Vinci-inspired whirligig tools past charming constellations on its way to the North Pole. Despite the genius and reverie, it cannot be overlooked that the film's explorers are a troupe of racist chariactures, as was quite common in films of this era.
