Endpaper sketch for Mis Primeros Conocimientos Vol. 1.
- Description:
- Title page and endpaper sketches for Mis Primeros Conocimientos Vol. 1: Trenes, Aviones, Viajes Interplanetarios (My First Knowledge Vol. 1: Trains, Airplanes, Space Travel), by Leonard Everett Fisher, circa 1960. Space-themed children’s literature began to proliferate in the 1950s and 1960s. Through playful illustrations and the use of simple metaphors, children’s authors were able to incite curiosity about space and technology in a younger audience. Children’s literature publishing in this period boomed, as total annual sales of children’s books nearly tripled between 1950–1960, reaching a record high of $88 million in 1960. American children of the era had access to an unprecedented quantity of children’s books, most of them illustrated.
