Haycox at High School Age

Description:

Haycox during his days at the old Lincoln High School in Portland, December 17, 1913. On loan from Ernest Haycox, Jr. (63K). While he attended high school from 1913 to 1917, Haycox lived on his own, supporting himself by selling newspapers and working as a bellhop at an apartment hotel, a job that included room and board. Haycox was a dedicated and ambitious student, active in many student clubs and other extracurricular activities. He contributed many stories to the high school literary magazine, The Cardinal. While still a student, he passed himself off as 18, though he was just 16, in order to join the Oregon National Guard. Upon graduation Haycox immediately enlisted in the army when the United States entered World War I. He served in France through the spring of 1919 when he was discharged.
