Call’s work also focuses on the notion of affirmation of the culture and language of the American Deaf Community. Certainly, much has changed and improved in the lives of the Deaf due to legal protections and a change in attitude by the majority population which has helped to lessen prejudice. In this image, Call presents such affirmation by the breaking of handcuffs and chains and the freedom of the Deaf hand like a butterfly in flight.
