Resistance

The use of imagery with an eye in the hand is repeated throughout David Call’s artwork. For Deaf people, the eye and the hand are one. It is with the eye that Deaf people see the beauty of the motions of sign language. To him, they are interlocked and related, one and the same. Reflecting a repeated theme in his work, Call dramatically displays the Deaf person handcuffed on one hand and in another attempting to smash with a hammer the chattering teeth that represent the oral method.
