Ann Nolan Clark
Ann Nolan Clark (1896-1995) was an American author and educator best known for her books which explored Native American culture through the perspective of a Native child. Clark, who spent 25 years teaching Tesuque Pueblo children in New Mexico, quickly realized that there was a dearth of children's books that catered to indigenous culture and language. To remedy this, she began writing books with her students in mind, winning a Caldecott Honor in 1942 for her book, In My Mother's House. The story, illustrated by Pueblo artist Velino Herrara, consists of poems by Tewa children and explores the power and simplicity of everyday objects. Over the course of her career, Clark wrote 31 books which focused on the Native American experience.
In World Song (1960, illustrated by Kurt Wiese), Nolan tells the story of a 12-year old American boy working to understand and learn the culture after being relocated to Costa Rica.
