Letter from CALYX to Margaret Randall

1/16/87

Dear Ms. Randall,

We are currently working on production of a very special edition of the journal titled Florilegia, A Retrospective of Calyx, A Journal of Art and Literature by Women. This will be a double edition of the journal (Volume 10#2&3) that will also be released as a book to commemmorate the first ten years of publishing the journal.

The editorial staff has just finished making the difficult decision of selecting work from the ten years of publishing to be included in Florilegia. The following work(s) of yours has been selected to be included in the anthology: Mother and Daughter San Pedro del Norte, Nicaragua/Honduras border

and Acoma Woman

We are writing to notify you of the selection of your work to be reprinted in Florilegia. We also need to request a short up-to-date biography to include with the contributors notes. The biographical data we have may not be current and we hope to be able to update readers on your latest endeavors.

We are on a very tight production schedule for this special anthology. We need a response from you by February 5th. We are currently in production and plan to have typeset completed by February 16th. We were not able to notify contributors selected for the anthology sooner because final decisions were very difficult and only completely finalized this week. We apologize for asking for a reply on short notice but will appreciate your quick response.

CALYX originally registered a copyright for your work under a IX copyright number for collective works for the specific issue of the journal in which your work originally appeared. We do not need a release from you to republish the work unless you have since published the work in another book or anthology. If you have, then we need to acknowledge where else the work has been published as well as be able to contact the other publisher of the work and request their permission to publish the work again in CALYX.

We need two things from you by February 5th:

1) A SHORT CURRENT BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT, and

2) if the work has been published elsewhere since publication by CALYX then we need TO BE ABLE TO CONTACT THE OTHER PUBLISHER FOR PERMISSION TO REPRINT AND FOR AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT STATEMENT, so please send the title of the work it appeared in as well as the name and address of the publisher.

We will be publishing this anthology as a book as well as a double journal edition. As payment for your work you will receive a copy of the edition. (Please let us know if you will want a book or journal edition.) You will also be able to purchase extra copies at a 40% contributor discount. Although we don't have the funds to pay for in cash fro your contribution to the book edition, we hope to be able to pay contributors a per-page percentage of profits from book sales at a later date. In November of 1987 we will send a report on the status of sales of the edition.

AGAIN, WE ARE ON AN EXTREMELY TIGHT SCHEDULE AND WE NEED TO GET THE TYPESET COMPLETED BY FEBRUARY 15. WE MUST HEAR FROM YOU BY FEBRUARY 5 IF THERE ARE ANY PROBLEMS WITH OUR REPRINTING YOUR WORK. If we don't hear from you by then we will assume there are no problems.

We hope you will be pleased to be included in this special retrospective of CALYX's first ten years of publishing. We look forward to hearing from you and hope you will enjoy the edition when it is released in April. We also want to thank you for having chosen to send your work to CALYX for publication and being a part of CALYX's first ten years.

For your convenience in replying we have enclosed a stamped-self-addressed envelope.

Sincerely,

"MARGARITA DONNELLY

Dear Ms. Donnelly:

I was delighted to learn that two of my poems will be appearing in your retrospective anthology; I look forward to seeing Florilegia. I would prefer to have my contributor's copy in book form.

I live in Tucscon, Arizona, where I work as a freelance writer. My poetry and fiction have recently appeared in Heresies, Sojourner, and The Virginia Quarterly Review. I've just finished my first novel, The Bean Trees, and am now awaiting my first child, which is due to arrive before your next issue.

The two poems you selected — "Your Mother's Eyes" and "Remember the Moon Survives" — have not been published elsewhere since their appearance in your magazine last year.

I'm honored to have been a part of Calyx's first ten years. Best wished for your next decade.

Sincerely,

"BARBARA KINGSOLVER
