Esther Pissarro
Esther Pissarro, nee Bensusan, born in 1870, attended the Crystal Place School of Art, Science, and Literature in Britain where she perfected the art of wood engraving. Esther Pissarro married Lucien Pissarro, a fellow wood engraver and Arts and Crafts Movement enthusiast, especially revered by William Morris and the Kelmscott Press. Inspired by the Movement and the work of Morris, Lucien and Esther Pissarro founded the Eragny Press in 1894. The Press melded English and French illustrated book design and Morrisian principles into their original designs, complete with the characteristic wood engraving of specialty to the Pissarros (Christie’s, 2020).
