Ethiopian Missal

CREATOR UNKNOWN

Ethiopia, 1702-1708. MS 105

A missal is a Christian service book containing the necessary texts for the recitation and celebration of the mass and ceremonial directions. While not fully illuminated, there are some independent drawings in the flyleaves and blank folios of the manuscript that include a drawing of two humans, a drawing of John, Son of Thunder, prayer, and a drawing of the Ethiopian saint Takla Haymanot (1215-1313). In addition to the figural drawings, there are many decorative illuminations in the margins of the text.
