Ethiopian Manuscripts
The University of Oregon is proud to own three Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo manuscript books, two of which are beautifully illuminated, as well as a "magic" scroll. With a collection of homilies, a Dawit (Psalter) and a Missal, the Ethiopian collection provides an insight into the Ethiopian Christian tradition. Perhaps one of the most remarkable facts about Ethiopian Christian manuscripts is that they are one of the few places in the world to continue medieval manuscript binding, parchment, and writing traditions late into the modern era. Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo has been practiced since the fourth century CE, first adopted by Aksumite emperor Ezana. In addition to the traditional saints, the religion has an entire hagiography entirely unique to Ethiopia.
