Leaf From a Poetry Manuscript

MAWLANA NUR AD-DIN ‘ABD AR-RAHMAN JAMI (1414-1472)

Mid 18th century, North India. MS 133

This leaf from a Persian book of poetry by the famous Persian Sufi poet, Jami. While currently the context of this leaf is not known, given the floral decoration in the inner and outer borders of the folio, it may be an excerpt from his Beheristan, or the Abode of Spring (for a folio from the Beheristan, please see Special Collections & University Archives MS 017). Given the gold leaf on the bottom of the folio as well as the framing flowers just above it, this may be the title page to one of his poems. Other notable works by Jami include the Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones) and the Diwanha-ye Sehganeh (Triple Divans).
