The Takegami is an album that comprises works created by various calligraphers in the Nara through Edo period (ca. eighth – seventeenth century). Most of the works are from Japan, with a few sutra fragments from Korea. Included are 319 calligraphy fragments executed in ink or gold on paper, some on dyed or decorated paper, as well as tanzaku (poem slips) or shikishi (poem cards). It also includes autographs, letters, poems, and calligraphic excerpts from scriptures by famous statesmen, literary men, painters, and priests of old Japan, ranging from writings left by the Emperor Shomu of the eighth century to the seventeenth century.
