Russian Manuscripts
The Russian collection features texts only from Russian Orthodoxy, written in the language used exclusively for religious texts: Old Church-Slavic. Two of the three manuscripts in this area of the collection are lavishly illuminated, including a fully illuminated, watercolor Apocalypse. This collection features both private and public devotional books, with two examples from Books of Hours as private devotion examples and the Apocalypse as public, given its large size. The manuscripts come from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the practice of Russian Orthodoxy was beginning to shift.
