Men's Gymnasium (1909)
Location: 1215 E. 13th Ave., Eugene, Oregon
Date: 1909; 1913
Architect: John Hunzicker; MacNaughton and Raymond
DESCRIPTION
The Men's Gymnasium of 1909 was designed by John Hunzicker, a prolific Eugene architect, who also designed the Eugene Hotel.
The gymnasium, a wooden structure, existed where Columbia Hall now stands. Upon its construction, the 1890 gymnasium became the Women's Gym. In 1913, a swimming pool was incorporated into this structure, designed by MacNaughton and Raymond, a Portland firm formerly associated with Ellis F. Lawrence. In 1917, in response to World War I, an open air drill hall was built to its east near where Volcanology now stands.
The new Physical Education facility of 1935 largely replaced this gym although the pool continued to function until 1954/55 when the entire structure was razed. A new pool, Leighton Pool, was added to the Physical Education building (now Esslinger Hall) in 1958/59.
